Humble Worship Grounds
Born of love and necessity, the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Endeavor, WI, has served as a sanctuary for the migrant workers of Puerto Rico, Mexico, the West Indies and Texas dating back to 1960. Traveling from afar to work the farm fields of central Wisconsin, adjusting to a new life in Endeavor was not easy for the migrants. With unfamiliar surroundings, language and cultural barriers, they struggled to balance daily life and sought out a familiar place to worship, educate and develop a sense of community they cherished back home.
In 1959 Five Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa began fostering the faith of the Spanish speaking migrant children at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission at Endeavor, Wisconsin.
These Sisters, made daily visits to the migrant workers becoming central to their new lives in Wisconsin, distributed clinical services while teaching personal health habits and organized communal events . Their lives intertwined both spiritually and socially. In 1964, Sister Lucan OP (Kathleen Broderick Stagney) who left the order and now lives in Cleveland, OH, and Sister Gratiana, OP (Joeann Daley) who now lives in Shorewood, WI, while joining the other Sisters for prayer and for the evening visits to the families, their primary labor from sunrise to sunset, was on the scaffold, creating the mosaic of our Lady of Guadalupe, which is still standing today.
These two Sisters, who loved and cared so deeply for the migrant workers, created the beautiful mosaic shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego that still stands today.
Future Plans
Located in Endeavor, WI, the Lady of Guadalupe garden is approximately 1-acre and is meant to restore a spiritual landscape that celebrates the story of a chapel and shrine originally built to support the social, health, and educational needs of the regional migrant community as far back as the early 1950s.
The overall site plan is divided into a series of intimate garden rooms, designed to provide moments of respite while encouraging spiritual reflection. Starting at Our Lady Plaza, visitors are welcomed with an introduction to the gardens and to those individuals and organizations who made the restoration possible.
